As much as Halloween can be fun, there can be a lot of pressure to fit in and conform to labels that relate to drinking, smoking, or doing drugs.

This Halloween shed the labels, take off the mask, #BeYourself.

Here are our 4 tips on how to #BeYourself this Halloween:

1. Don't be afraid to say "no"

If you're invited to a party, find out what it's going to be like. Don't be shy to ask if there's going to be drinking, smoking or people getting high. You can always choose to go to another party if you don't feel comfortable.  If you decide to go, have a plan. Think about how you will say "no" to things that make you uncomfortable. Check out some tips on how to say no to a drink.

2. Tell someone

Talk to your parents or someone you trust. Let them know if you're feeling worried or if you have questions about drugs and alcohol. Some people have text codes or letters to signal that you want to be picked up quickly. It could be something like the letter "X" or the word "turtle" or a special emoji.

3. Be open and honest

If people are pressuring you, make a point to let them know that you're not judging them, so you would like it if they don't judge you for choosing not to use or drink. Stand up for yourself if you feel like you're being pressured to do something you don't want to do.

4. Tell a friend

Make sure you have support in uncomfortable situations. Having a friend speak up for you or someone you trust to pick you up can make a huge difference!

If you choose to be sober this Halloween we stand by your choice to #BeYourself.

Labels unfortunately don't stop at drugs, alcohol or smoking. If you are feeling pressured about anything, however small you may think it is, talk to someone about it. Find out how on our Mental Health resource page.
