Learning to Love Physical Activity

Let's get the ball rolling and get real about physical activity. We need to get our groove on each and every day! Here are just a few reasons why being active is so important:

  1. Gets your balance, coordination, and flexibility on track.

  2. Makes you a better student!

  3. Increases your self-esteem and boosts your confidence.

  4. Helps you maintain a healthy body weight.

  5. Helps you build muscle.

  6. Makes you happier.

  7. Improves your skills and helps you learn new ones.

  8. Improves your sleep.

  9. Improves your mental health and energy levels.

How Much Do I Need?

A lot of people know they need to be active, but they don't really understand how much.

You need at least 60 minutes of heart pumping, sweat producing physical activity each day.

To make things easier, you can break up those 60 minutes into four sets of 15 minutes! Imagine all the possibilities!

This is where choosing your favourite activities come into play: pick ones that you enjoy. You can use different apps to help keep you on track and analyze your progress. Take advantage of them! If your destination is less than 2 kilometres away, you should consider walking. Trips under 7 kilometres are perfect for biking, but that shouldn't stop you from biking longer distances! Challenge yourself. You don't need to be a professional athlete to engage in physical activity.

Knowing your body's limits is very important. If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a break and try again later. Don't push yourself so hard that you quit. Create a routine that works for you. Do the things you love! Ottawa has a lot to offer.

What if I Feel Like I Don't Look the Part?

All bodies can move, including the one you see in the mirror. The way you see your body can have an impact on your level of physical activity. 

Here are some tips for improving your body image: 

  • If you are feeling down about yourself, talk to someone you trust like a friend, family member, or healthcare professional.
  • List your strengths, talents, and other qualities that you love about yourself.
  • Surround yourself and spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself and who support you.
  • Find a balance in achieving healthy living. Focus on healthy eating, being active, and feeling good about yourself.
  • Choose a physical activity you enjoy. You are more likely to do it often if you like it. Do it for the joy of it, not to lose weight.
  • Wear clothes that express your personal style and that are comfortable.
  • Carry yourself with confidence and pride in knowing who you are.
  • Do something positive every day.
  • Find beauty in yourself and in others.
